A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MICHIGAN'S SAM 4

For several years, Michigan's SAM 4 has been led by long time modeler, Karl Spielmaker. Karl edits and publishes the chapter's newsletter on a quarterly basis, with other issues done when the urge strikes him. In addition to the newsletter duties, he and Bob Pattison, another long time member, collaborate to conduct the chapter's annual Michigan Antique Modelers contest at Sturgis, Michigan. The MAM contest is well known throughout the Midwest and draws contestants from all over the country. The contest offers a nice schedule of SAM (gas and rubber), Nostalgia and RC events including two of Karl's favorites, Slag and Jimmy Allen. The group has a small flying field near Marne, Michigan where they test and conduct short flights. They also fly at the Hastings, Michigan airport but, again, are limited to short flights.

During the winter months the group engages in indoors flying on two Friday nights at Rockford and one Sunday afternoon at Potterville. (This activity is included in a separate web site location)

The MAM newsletter is available to those interested in our activities and can be obtained by sending $10.00 to Karl at the following address:

For those interested, the 1999 MAM contest is scheduled at the Kirsch Airport, Sturgis, Michigan on June 19 and 20. Entry forms can be obtained from Karl at his above address and will include a list of motels in the area. A traditional highlight of the contest is the bean feed held on Saturday night in Woody Bartelt's hangar. Camping is allowed on the airport, but there are no shower facilities provided.
