INDOOR ACTIVITES FOR 2000 AND 2001

For the current indoor flying season there are two sites available for indoor flying. For those in the area of Grand Rapids, indoor flying will take place at the SS. Peter and Paul Elementary School gymnasium. Click here to view the calendar of flying dates.  The school is located on the city's northwest side and the address is 1433 Hamilton NW. This site has been made available through the efforts of Chuck McLanis who can be reached at 616-363-3703. He can also be reached through e-mail at: chuckmc@iserv.net.

The Potterville site is available again through the efforts of Chuck Deyo and flying will take place on the third Sunday of each month from 12:30 through 4:00 PM. Chuck can be reached at 616-367-4723 and e-mail at: speaktru@iserv.net. The Potterville site is very nice as it has a higher, almost uncluttered ceiling.

Many of the Michigan Antique Modelers fly indoors during the colder months when outdoor flying is next to impossible. As with most all SAM flying the indoor activities are mostly for fun and serious competition is almost unheard of. There are a variety of indoor models that are flown but there are special mass launches of the Blatter 40 and Peck ROG. Scale models are showing up in increasing numbers each year but few match the quality of those built by Fred VanderVeer. Fred apparently likes to build wings as most of his planes are biplanes or tri-planes. His handiwork can be seen in the photographs following this narrative.

During the Spring of 1999 several young people came to the local flying site to observe and learn how to build performance indoor models. They subsequently flew their planes in the High School Science Olympiads that take place in Michigan each year and several won their events. Bringing young people into the hobby has been a special interest of Chuck McLanis and he has found the results of his efforts very rewarding.

Anyone reading this narrative is welcome to participate in our flying activities and will enjoy a friendly welcome. Just tell one of the two Chucks how you came to know about our activities. Now enjoy the following photographs. New pictures will be added on a regular basis.
